Bill Gates Warns AI Could Cause a Billion Deaths

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates warned in an NBC News interview that artificial intelligence is powerful enough to trigger events causing a billion deaths. He characterized this as a catastrophic-risk scenario, explaining that AI acts as a force multiplier for malicious actors by lowering the cost and skill required to launch massive cyberattacks or design deadly biological threats.

Gates argued that industry self-regulation is insufficient and urged law enforcement and politicians to mandate safeguards and monitoring. To mitigate these risks, he proposed creating national coordinating bodies and an international organization modeled after nuclear inspections and aviation regulations. He also suggested taxing AI and robots to fund social safety nets and labor retraining, while pledging $1 billion through the Gates Foundation to improve AI access in health, education, and agriculture.

Responses to AI regulation remain divided. While CEOs of OpenAI and Anthropic have briefed the UN Security Council on risks to humanity, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg rejected industry-wide coordination. In the United States, President Donald Trump has rejected global efforts to control the technology to avoid stifling its growth, and House Speaker Mike Johnson declined to pursue federal legislation. Meanwhile, the European Union began enforcing safety checks for systemic-risk models under the EU AI Act on August 2, 2026, and several U.S. states have initiated their own regulatory plans.
