Charlie Cook Predicts Democratic Gains in Midterm Elections

Political analyst Charlie Cook reports a significant deterioration in polling for Republicans ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Cook describes the current trend as a red undertow, suggesting that while the Democratic brand remains weak, voters are increasingly voting against Republicans due to dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump and his agenda.

Rising energy prices for gas, diesel, and heating oil, alongside the impact of tariffs on farmers, are driving this shift in rural Republican strongholds. Consequently, Cook predicts Democrats could see a net gain of over 20 seats in the House, a figure that exceeds the Cook Political Report's initial estimate of 5 to 15 seats.

President Donald Trump plans to campaign for candidates such as Iowa's Ashley Hinson in the 30 days leading up to the election. However, Cook notes that many Republicans in tight swing races, including those in Michigan, may prefer the president avoid visiting their districts.
