Ukraine Strikes Russian Bases as Russia Hits Odesa Cargo Ship

Ukrainian forces targeted Russian drone and command sites while Russian drones struck a Liberian-flagged cargo ship in Odesa, killing one sailor.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine conducted precision strikes on October 2 and 3 against Russian military infrastructure in the Donetsk, Kherson, and Belgorod regions. These operations targeted a drone storage and launch facility, a command post near Novaya Tavolzhanka, and a materiel warehouse near Voznesenovka. Ukrainian forces also destroyed a military crossing over the Mokri Yaly River and damaged a repair base near Hromivka to disrupt Russian logistics and air surveillance.

Simultaneously, Russian forces launched a drone strike on October 3 against a Liberian-flagged cargo ship in the port of Odesa. The attack killed one motorman sailor and injured three others, leading to the evacuation of 13 crew members. The Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority condemned the strike as an attack on a civilian vessel.

Russia disputed the civilian nature of the target, with the Military of Russia claiming the vessel had delivered military supplies to Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has defended such operations by asserting that commercial ships are used to transport weapons and fuel for the Ukrainian military. Ukrainian authorities and international maritime bodies reject these claims, maintaining the ships are standard merchant vessels.
