Netanyahu Orders Shin Bet to Review Eisenkot Security Detail

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intervened on Sunday evening, instructing the Shin Bet to ensure that Gadi Eisenkot, leader of the Yashar Party and a prime ministerial candidate, receives protection at an appropriate level based on need. The intervention follows a decision by Shin Bet Director David Zini to deny Eisenkot a permanent state security detail.

Zini informed the Central Elections Committee that the agency possesses no intelligence indicating intentions to harm Eisenkot. While the agency refused permanent protection, it offered to assign a liaison and gather intelligence if serious concerns emerge. Zini maintained that the decision over the security detail was made by the Shin Bet chief, who is solely responsible for the matter.

Eisenkot's campaign formally objected to the denial in writing to the Shin Bet, Israel Police, and the attorney general. The campaign argued that private security is insufficient amid escalating physical threats and social media warnings. Furthermore, the campaign alleged the decision was politically motivated, claiming the government and the Ministerial Committee on Shin Bet Affairs sought to avoid images of a prime ministerial candidate surrounded by state security, which could enhance his political standing.

In response to the Prime Minister's instruction, the Shin Bet stated it is operating according to the law and continues to monitor threats while maintaining contact with Eisenkot's private security firm.
