North Korea Deploys Missile Unit to Russia for Ukraine Strikes

The Government of North Korea has deployed a missile unit of approximately 90 personnel to the Voronezh region of western Russia. According to Ukraine's Main Directorate of Intelligence, the unit is integrating into Russia's 112th Missile Brigade and is expected to be equipped with six launchers and 120 ballistic missiles. This follows the transfer of 40 KN-23 and KN-24 ballistic missiles, adding to an estimated 150 missiles supplied by Pyongyang since late 2023.

Ukrainian officials report that North Korean KN-23 missiles were used last week to strike civilian infrastructure, including a hit on a residential home in Radushne that killed five people and a strike near Kryvyi Rih that killed six family members. In response, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha announced that any North Korean missile systems deployed on Russian territory would be considered legitimate targets for the Ukrainian military.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that the partnership allows Russia to help North Korea improve its weapons and gain combat experience, describing the cooperation as a threat to Asia. This military expansion follows the deployment of 14,000 North Korean troops to the Kursk region. Meanwhile, North Korea launched an unidentified projectile off its east coast on August 6, shortly after Kim Yo Jong warned that Pyongyang would not be a passive onlooker to Japan's growing defense capabilities.
