Aviation Leaders Urge Andy Burnham to Cut Flight Taxes

Aviation industry executives called on Prime Minister Andy Burnham to reduce high taxation burdens on the sector during the Farnborough Airshow in Hampshire. The leaders specifically targeted Air Passenger Duty (APD) and airport charges, arguing that current rates hinder economic growth and global competitiveness.

British Airways CEO Sean Doyle warned that the taxation burden is higher than in most other markets where the airline operates. Wizz Air Managing Director Yvonne Moynihan added that high taxes deter tourists and place the United Kingdom at a disadvantage. Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary criticized previous APD hikes, claiming they account for nearly 33% of his airline's average flight price.

The industry argues that tax reductions would lower ticket prices for consumers. They noted that current rates can cost a family of four flying to Florida over £1,000 in taxes.
