Crime Dominates Brazil Presidential Election as Rio Residents Launch Initiatives

Crime has emerged as the central issue for voters ahead of the October presidential election in Brazil. Senator Flávio Bolsonaro is challenging President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva by promising hard-line policies to dismantle organized crime, with a specific focus on Rio de Janeiro. In contrast, President Lula advocates for increased federal government involvement and improved coordination between state institutions to address the crisis.

In Rio de Janeiro, where a police operation last year resulted in more than 120 deaths, residents have launched independent grassroots initiatives to combat gang recruitment. These efforts include the 01 Sobreviventes podcast, hosted by former traffickers to warn youth about the dangers of gang life, and the Abraco Campeao martial arts academy, which provides free training and education.

Other community-led projects include the R3 therapeutic community, which offers psychological assistance and vocational courses to help former criminals resocialize. Additionally, grieving mothers have organized projects to provide job training for youth under 26. These organizers argue that a lack of employment opportunities drives criminality and that state security forces frequently employ excessive violence.
