Kim Jong Un Visits Dandong to Strengthen China Ties
Kim Jong Un conducted a surprise visit to Dandong, China, inaugurating a new border bridge and meeting senior officials to bolster economic and strategic ties.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un conducted a surprise one-day visit to the Chinese border city of Dandong on October 24, 2026. Marking his first trip to China in over a year, Kim entered the country via the New Yalu River Bridge, a $300 million project completed in 2014 that remained unused for over a decade until North Korea recently finished its connecting infrastructure. The bridge is designed to expand trade through 24-hour container and heavy cargo traffic.
During the visit, Kim met with senior Chinese officials, including Politburo Standing Committee member Wang Huning and Foreign Minister Wang Yi. While he did not meet President Xi Jinping in person, Wang Huning conveyed cordial greetings from Xi and hosted a banquet in his name. Kim toured a bus manufacturing facility and attended a memorial ceremony for soldiers killed in the Korean War, characterizing the bilateral relationship as an "invincible" and "unbreakable" friendship.
The diplomatic move occurs as Pyongyang seeks to align with Beijing and Moscow against the United States in what Kim describes as a "new Cold War." This effort to revitalize ties with China follows a period of deepening military cooperation between North Korea and Russia. South Korean intelligence suggests the visit may signal a positive outlook for a potential summit between Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump at the upcoming APEC meeting in Shenzhen, though Kim has previously rebuffed Trump's proposals to revive diplomacy.
