General Motors and Lockheed Martin Partner to Scale Munitions Production

General Motors and Lockheed Martin announced a collaboration on June 16, 2026, to accelerate the production of American military equipment and strengthen the defense industrial base. Facilitated by the U.S. Department of Defense, the partnership operates under a memorandum of understanding to combine the automaker's high-rate commercial manufacturing and engineering capabilities with Lockheed Martin's weapons expertise.

The collaboration focuses on improving production readiness, strengthening supply chains, and boosting manufacturing efficiency to address depleted stockpiles resulting from aid to Ukraine and the war in Iran. This move follows President Donald Trump's June 11 invocation of the Defense Production Act to resolve manufacturing bottlenecks. To support these goals, Lockheed Martin is investing $9 billion through 2030 to modernize 20 facilities, while General Motors plans to spend $7 billion on U.S.-based research and development.

While the companies have not identified specific projects, the partnership aims to manufacture commonly used components for weapons systems, including missiles and interceptors. In a broader push to expand industrial capacity, reports indicate General Motors is also in discussions with defense contractors RTX and L3Harris for similar production-boosting tie-ups. Separately, Ford Motor Company is in talks with the U.S. government regarding military-related projects.
