Narendra Modi Approves Extensions for Cabinet and Home Secretaries
Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved one-year service extensions for Cabinet Secretary T V Somanathan and Home Secretary Govind Mohan, allowing both to serve beyond the standard retirement age.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved one-year service extensions for Cabinet Secretary T V Somanathan and Home Secretary Govind Mohan on August 5, 2026. The decision allows both high-ranking officials to continue their tenures beyond the standard retirement age of 60 by relaxing Fundamental Rule 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.
T V Somanathan's extension ensures his continued service beyond August 30, 2026. Govind Mohan, a 1989-batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Sikkim cadre, received an extension that moves his tenure from August 22, 2026, to August 22, 2027. Both officers originally assumed their positions in August 2024.
This marks the second consecutive year of extensions for Mohan, who previously received one on July 11, 2025, and was originally scheduled to retire on September 30, 2025. The formal orders were issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions.
