Texas Senate Candidate James Talarico Faces Backlash Over Democracy Comments

James Talarico, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Texas, is facing political backlash after a video clip from a June 2024 interview resurfaced on social media. In the footage from the MeidasTouch Network's "The Weekend Show," Talarico stated that the United States has not lived up to the promise of democracy and claimed the country is "backsliding."

During the interview, Talarico suggested that Americans should look to Western European countries for inspiration to achieve a "true democracy." The remarks drew a negative response from Elon Musk and prompted the conservative political action committee Lone Star Liberty to label Talarico an "America-laster."

Talarico's campaign defended the comments, asserting that he believes the United States is the greatest country in the world and that his goal is to seek a "more perfect union." Talarico, a former teacher and seminarian, is currently running for the U.S. Senate against Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
