Kenya Reports 354 Nationals Linked to Russia-Ukraine War
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi informed Parliament that 354 Kenyans are linked to the Russia-Ukraine war, with 84 killed or missing in action.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi informed Parliament on October 8 that 354 Kenyan nationals have been linked to the Russia-Ukraine war. The figures include 84 individuals classified as killed or missing in action, 77 on the front lines, 38 in military camps, and 34 hospitalized. Another 52 remain in unknown locations, while five Kenyans are held as prisoners of war in Ukraine's Zakhid 1 camp.
Kenya argues that many of these citizens were victims of human trafficking, lured by false promises of employment. To halt further recruitment, Mudavadi negotiated Kenya's placement on Russia's Stop List during a visit to Moscow in March. He confirmed that no additional Kenyan nationals have been enlisted in the Special Military Operation since that implementation.
While 62 Kenyans have been repatriated, the Russian Defence Ministry stated it cannot cover the costs of repatriating the remains of deceased citizens. President William Ruto has engaged in direct discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to facilitate the release of detainees and the return of the remains of four Kenyans currently held by Ukraine.
