US Cyberspace Solarium Commission Warns of Weakened National Cybersecurity

The U.S. Cyberspace Solarium Commission reported a decline in progress toward 82 key cyber defense goals, warning that the United States and its economy are increasingly vulnerable to hacking. The commission attributes this regression to significant budget cuts and the gutting of federal agencies under the second Trump administration.

Reductions have specifically impacted the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), as well as the State Department, National Science Foundation, and Department of Commerce. Experts identify the disbanding of the Critical Infrastructure Partnership Advisory Council and the expiration of the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act as critical failures in public-private coordination. These gaps coincide with increasing threats from nation-state actors in China, North Korea, and Iran, alongside the rise of AI-driven attacks.

While the White House and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem maintain that CISA is fulfilling its mission, critics argue the administration is shifting coordination responsibilities to the private sector without providing necessary resources or enforcement mechanisms.
