External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar advocated for strengthened India-Africa ties and United Nations Security Council reforms during a speech in Addis Ababa.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called for a modernized partnership between India and Africa during a speech at the Adwa Memorial Museum in Addis Ababa on October 10, 2026. He argued that the current United Nations Security Council neither delivers effectively nor represents fairly, asserting that both India and Africa must be better represented in global decision-making.
Jaishankar highlighted the alignment between India's Viksit Bharat 2047 vision and Africa's Agenda 2063. He noted that bilateral trade is nearing 100 billion USD, making India the fourth-largest trading partner for the continent. To build on this economic foundation, he encouraged Indian businesses to invest in Africa and advocated for deeper cooperation in artificial intelligence, drones, space, and digital governance.
Beyond trade and diplomacy, the minister reaffirmed India's commitment to enhancing African health security. He specifically focused on the provision of affordable medicines and the localization of pharmaceutical production across the continent.
