Democrats Plan Legislative Blitz to Repeal Trump Tariffs

Democrats prepare to dismantle President Donald Trump's tariff regime and restore congressional trade authority following a landslide victory in the midterm elections.

Following a landslide victory in the midterm elections, Democrats are preparing a legislative and investigative blitz to dismantle the tariff regime established by President Donald Trump. Democratic leaders plan to introduce bills within the first 100 hours of the new Congress to claw back taxation powers from the executive branch and repeal 50% tariffs on Canadian goods.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senator-elect Ron Wyden identified the restoration of congressional authority as a primary goal to lower the cost of living for Americans. The Tax Foundation estimates that these tariffs increased the average U.S. household's tax burden by $820 in 2026.

President Donald Trump has vowed to use his veto power to block these efforts, arguing that tariffs are essential for returning manufacturing to the United States. While Democrats hold majorities in both chambers, they currently lack the two-thirds majority required to override a veto and the 60-vote threshold needed to break a Senate filibuster.
