AfD and Die Linke Win Key German State Elections

German voters shifted sharply toward political extremes in state elections on September 20, 2026, as the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) and far-left Die Linke secured major victories. The Alternative for Germany won the election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with approximately 38% of the vote, following a previous landslide in Saxony-Anhalt on September 6. In Berlin, Die Linke emerged as the strongest force with roughly 26% of the vote, campaigning on rent caps and the expropriation of corporate housing.

These results represent a historic collapse for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the CDU recorded its worst postwar result, receiving between 4.9% and 5.5% of the vote and, in final counts, failing to meet the 5% threshold required to enter the state parliament for the first time in the history of the Federal Republic. In Berlin, the CDU fell to second place with approximately 20% of the vote.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz characterized the outcome as a "disaster" and a "profound turning point," but he rejected calls for his resignation. Merz canceled a trip to the UN General Assembly to manage the crisis and vowed to maintain his ruling coalition with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) to pursue economic, tax, and pension reforms. While the SPD has committed to the coalition, Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil stated that the current course of reforms cannot continue.

The AfD's rise has sparked warnings regarding democratic stability and the safety of Jewish life, while Die Linke's victory in Berlin drew criticism from Israeli Ambassador Ron Prosor over allegations of antisemitism. Despite the AfD's gains, other parties maintain a "firewall" by refusing to enter governing coalitions with the far-right.
