Peoples Democratic Party Accuses Tinubu of Creating Authoritarian State

The Peoples Democratic Party accused President Bola Tinubu of transforming Nigeria into a fully authoritarian regime following a report by the Human Rights Foundation.

The Peoples Democratic Party accused President Bola Tinubu's administration of transforming Nigeria into a full authoritarian state. In a statement released Saturday, the party cited a global assessment from the Human Rights Foundation's Tyranny Tracker platform that classified Nigeria as a fully authoritarian regime.

The party alleged that the administration has eroded democratic institutions, suppressed dissent, and weakened checks and balances. Specifically, the PDP criticized the National Assembly for failing to provide necessary oversight of the executive branch. As evidence of the lack of freedom of speech, the party highlighted recent government-led media attacks against the Catholic Church and Cardinal John Onaiyekan.

Furthermore, the PDP claimed that the government is weaponizing security agencies against political opponents and designing the 2027 elections to be a mere formality. The party called for an immediate end to these practices to ensure the survival of democracy in Nigeria.
