Narendra Modi Opens Climate Conference in New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the two-day international conference titled "The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics" on September 19, 2026, at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. Organized by the National Green Tribunal, the event gathers judicial representatives, government officials, and environmental experts from 17 countries to address policy gaps and strengthen institutional cooperation on climate resilience.

During his address, Modi argued that the responsibility for carbon emissions has been wrongly placed on developing nations. He noted that India's per capita emissions are less than half the global average, while those of developed nations are six times higher. He asserted that India is the only G20 country to fulfill its Paris Agreement commitments ahead of schedule.

Modi detailed India's environmental progress over the last 12 years, citing a 400% increase in non-fossil energy capacity and the installation of rooftop solar panels in 50 lakh households through the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. He also highlighted the launch of the world's longest hydrogen train and the expansion of the national metro network to over 1,000 km.

The conference includes four technical sessions designed to examine global environmental challenges and create a roadmap for future policy implementation. The inaugural session was attended by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, and National Green Tribunal Chairperson Prakash Shrivastava.
