Iran Faces Severe Economic Crisis Amid US-Israel War

Iran's top security official warns of a historic economic collapse driven by a US-led naval blockade and ongoing war with Israel.

National Security Adviser Mohsen Rezaei warned during a high-level government meeting on Saturday that Iran is facing one of the most difficult economic periods in its history. The crisis follows more than seven months of war initiated by the United States and Israel in February.

The Iranian rial has plummeted as a result of a U.S. naval blockade and tightened sanctions that have crippled oil exports and raised import costs. This deterioration has triggered a fuel crisis and widespread job resignations among teachers, nurses, and other government and private sector employees. Retirees have also protested over unpaid pensions.

President Masoud Pezeshkian acknowledged the worsening conditions, stating the government "has adopted a new posture to manage the special conditions," though he offered no specific details on the strategy. Further complicating the situation, the United States has blocked most civilian air travel, a move that may restrict the import of critical medicines.
