Trump and Meloni Clash Over Iran and Military Access

President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni experienced a public diplomatic rift at a NATO summit following disputes over U.S. military access to Italian bases.

Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni demonstrated a severe diplomatic rift during a NATO summit in Ankara on July 8, 2026, where the U.S. president walked past Meloni without greeting her before a group photo. The relationship soured beginning in March 2026 after Italy denied U.S. military aircraft access to the Sigonella air base in Sicily during operations against Iran.

Trump escalated the conflict on Truth Social on July 6, posting a photo of Meloni with the caption "RESTRAINING ORDER NEEDED" and claiming she had "begged" for a photograph at a G7 summit in France to boost her popularity. Meloni rejected these claims as "completely fabricated," stating that neither she nor Italy ever beg. Tensions further deepened after Meloni criticized Trump's attacks on Pope Leo XIV. In response, Trump accused her of lacking courage, though he later shifted to a more conciliatory tone during a press conference in Ankara, describing her as a "nice person" who made a mistake by refusing to support the U.S. in the Iran conflict.

Despite the personal friction, Italian officials including Defence Minister Guido Crosetto and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani emphasized that the strategic transatlantic alliance remains resilient. Tajani announced that Italy would cease responding to Trump's provocative remarks to avoid fueling disputes among allies. The rift also involved strategic disagreements over defense spending and Italy's decision to cancel orders for Boeing KC-46 Pegasus refuelers in favor of Airbus aircraft.
