Nigeria Begins Presidential Campaigns as Bola Tinubu Seeks Re-election
President Bola Tinubu began his re-election campaign on August 19 amid severe economic hardship and challenges from rivals Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.
Nigeria officially commenced presidential election campaigns on August 19, 2026, with Bola Tinubu seeking a second four-year term. The presidential vote is scheduled for January 16, followed by gubernatorial elections on February 6. While 18 candidates are running, the race is expected to be dominated by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former governor Peter Obi.
Leading up to the official start date, independent support groups launched grassroots efforts to defend the president's record. The PBAT Door-To-Door Movement organized a 3,000-man Posterity Walk in Lagos, while the Hope Alive Initiative deployed human mascots and SMS mobilization in Abuja. The ruling All Progressives Congress noted that while the Independent National Electoral Commission set August 19 as the legal start date, parties are not mandated to begin rallies immediately.
The campaign unfolds against a backdrop of soaring inflation and a cost-of-living crisis triggered by the administration's removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira. Despite these hardships and ongoing security crises involving banditry and kidnappings, the government has vowed to maintain its reform path. Tinubu has strengthened his political position by securing the loyalty of 31 of 36 state governors, while a 2025 attempt by the opposition to form a coalition collapsed, leaving the anti-incumbent vote split.
