Investors Brace for Democratic Sweep in 2026 Midterms

Corporate investors are adjusting portfolios as prediction markets signal a likely Democratic sweep of the U.S. Congress, potentially increasing scrutiny on AI and defense spending.

Corporate investors are preparing for a potential shift in power as the 2026 U.S. midterm elections approach. Prediction market Polymarket estimates a 72% chance of a Democratic sweep of both the House and the Senate, while a Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Donald Trump facing career-low approval ratings driven by the cost of living and conflict with Iran.

A Democratic majority is expected to benefit clean energy, housing, and healthcare sectors. Market strategist Magdalena Ocampo noted that such a sweep could create momentum for measures targeting prescription drug pricing and consumer fees to address affordability concerns. Conversely, the AI, data center, and defense sectors may face tighter legislative scrutiny and increased oversight of military spending.

Volatility has already hit the aerospace and defense sector, with the iShares U.S. Aerospace & Defense ETF trading 18.4% below its 52-week high. While there are fears that Democrats may roll back spending on specific programs like the Golden Dome, analysts suggest that ongoing wars in Iran and Ukraine provide a buffer for the industry. Companies with significant commercial exposure, such as GE Aerospace and RTX Corporation, are viewed as less vulnerable to shifts in military budgets. Some analysts believe the AI trade will remain intact because key federal agencies remain under Republican control and a Democratic majority may lack the votes to override presidential vetoes.
