Wang Yi Meets ASEAN and Australian Leaders in Manila

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi traveled to Manila, Philippines, on July 21 and 22, 2026, to participate in the China-ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and hold bilateral discussions. During meetings with ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn, Wang Yi reaffirmed China's support for ASEAN centrality and the fifth anniversary of the China-ASEAN comprehensive strategic partnership. He advocated for accelerating consultations on the South China Sea Code of Conduct, arguing that maritime disputes should not obstruct regional relations. However, he accused elements of the Philippine military and maritime law enforcement of provoking incidents to serve external interests.

Parallel to these regional talks, Wang Yi met with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong. He called for maintaining the improving trajectory of China-Australia ties through mutual respect and equality, while urging Australia to abandon double standards and uphold the principle of non-interference in internal affairs.

The diplomatic surge occurs as the Philippines holds the ASEAN chairmanship and continues to face maritime tensions with China. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is also scheduled to visit Manila for the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting, highlighting the competing geopolitical interests in the region.
