Donald Trump Retracts Military Threats to Seize Greenland

President Donald Trump announced during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos that he would not use military force to obtain Greenland. The statement retracted previous threats of violence against Denmark, which had created significant diplomatic friction and instability in political and financial markets.

In response to the initial threats, Denmark and several allies launched Operation Arctic Endurance, deploying a small tripwire force to the island to ensure security. Participating nations included the United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, Finland, Germany, and France. France provided the largest contingent with fifteen personnel, while German soldiers departed after two days.

The crisis was further exacerbated when Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store revealed private communications from the American president. While the NATO alliance remained intact and European members increased defense spending, the varied level of participation in Operation Arctic Endurance sparked criticism regarding the military capabilities and commitment of European Union member states to the mutual defense obligations of the Lisbon Treaty.
