CIA Director Warns Russia Over European Gray Zone Attacks

European authorities and NATO leaders have linked the Government of Russia to a surge in gray zone attacks across Europe, including cyberattacks, sabotage, and drone incursions. These activities have increased to approximately 15 incidents per month since April, with the goal of sowing panic and reducing military support for Ukraine.

Recent operations include the discovery of explosive drones at a German airport and drone incursions over Romania, one of which caused a residential fire. Authorities are also investigating suspected Russian sabotage at munitions facilities in Italy, Bulgaria, and Finland, as well as an arson attack on Milrem Robotics in Estonia and a thwarted attack on a drone factory in Slovakia.

In response to these escalations, Central Intelligence Agency Director John Ratcliffe traveled to Moscow to warn the Kremlin that the United States supports its NATO allies. While Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the reports as justifications for European militarization, U.S. intelligence warns that Russia may test NATO resolve with a limited assault on a member country in the coming years.
