Russia and Ukraine Exchange Strikes Ahead of Abu Dhabi Talks

Russia and Ukraine launched large-scale aerial attacks while preparing for trilateral peace negotiations in Abu Dhabi and implementing a localized ceasefire in Oleshky.

Russia and Ukraine exchanged large-scale aerial strikes on October 25 and 26, resulting in at least two deaths and numerous injuries. A Ukrainian drone attack on Voronezh, Russia, killed two people and injured 17, with many casualties occurring when debris hit a commuter train. Simultaneously, Russia launched 140 drones and missiles at 15 locations across Ukraine, including the Zalyutino power station in Kharkiv and infrastructure in Khmelnytskyi, Chernihiv, and Zaporizhzhia. The Ukrainian Air Force reported shooting down 112 drones and three missiles.

These hostilities occur as Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Federal Government of Russia, and the Federal Government of the United States prepare for trilateral negotiations in Abu Dhabi during the first half of November. Zelenskyy confirmed the meeting and stated that territorial issues must be settled at the leadership level.

Amid the broader conflict, Russia and Ukraine agreed to a localized ceasefire around the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky on October 23. Brokered by Melania Trump and Pope Leo, the arrangement establishes humanitarian corridors for food, medicine, and civilian evacuations in the flood-damaged town. The Kremlin suggested the Oleshky agreement could serve as a precedent for future localized ceasefires.
