Andy Burnham Restricts Vaping and Betting Shops on High Streets

Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced plans to restrict the proliferation of vaping and betting shops across British high streets. The government will consult on proposals that grant local councils the authority to block new betting shops and mandate that adult gaming centers and vape shops obtain planning permission.

To ensure compliance, the government will tighten the legal definition of a vape shop to prevent businesses from bypassing regulations by posing as convenience stores. Burnham stated that many high streets have been "hollowed out and become unrecognizable over decades of decline."

These measures follow a series of voter-friendly policies introduced since Burnham took office on July 20, including a £2 cap on bus fares and reduced VAT on electricity bills. The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve the quality and viability of local commercial centers.
