United States Transfers $725 Million to United Nations

The United States government initiated a $725 million payment to the United Nations to partially address billions in unpaid dues.

The Federal government of the United States has initiated the transfer of $725 million to the United Nations to partially address billions of dollars in unpaid dues. A United States Department of State notification to Congress dated August 4 indicates the funds are for the UN regular budget and should be processed before President Donald Trump addresses the UN General Assembly in New York next month.

While the payment provides immediate liquidity for salaries and prevents further spending cuts, it covers less than 20% of the $4 billion the UN claims Washington owes. The organization has faced a severe financial crisis, prompting the UN80 reform exercise, which resulted in a 9.2% budget cut for 2026 and the relocation of 2,000 jobs.

Failure to settle the remaining debt could lead to the United States losing its General Assembly voting rights in January under Article 19 of the UN Charter.
