Donald Trump Imposes 300 Percent Semiconductor Import Tariffs

President Donald Trump moved to impose tariffs of up to 300 percent on semiconductor chip imports into the United States. The measure is expected to significantly increase the cost of automobiles, medical devices, and consumer electronics on a global scale.

Tsung Ming Chung, a manager at ASML B.V., warned that these tariffs could cause the global semiconductor industry to grind to a halt. The impact is expected to be particularly severe for manufacturers in Ireland, Israel, South Korea, Taiwan, and Malaysia. In Malaysia, where semiconductor exports to the U.S. are valued at approximately RM60.6 billion, American companies operating locally, such as Intel, may face high costs when shipping chips back to the U.S.

To reduce reliance on the U.S. and Chinese markets, Chung suggested that ASEAN nations strengthen technological cooperation with the Netherlands and the European Union to develop a region-wide ecosystem.
