NATO Members Brace for U.S. Troop Reductions After Midterms

NATO member states fear President Donald Trump may reduce U.S. military involvement and funding in Europe following the November 3 midterm elections.

European diplomats are preparing for a potential reduction in U.S. involvement in NATO following the November 3 midterm elections. There are concerns that Donald Trump may intensify attacks on the alliance to consolidate his foreign policy legacy or rally his political base, particularly if Republicans suffer losses in Congress.

Potential measures include cutting funding for the bloc, limiting the PURL arms-buying scheme for Ukraine, or withdrawing thousands of U.S. troops from Europe. Currently, approximately 80,000 U.S. forces are stationed in Europe, with withdrawals already underway from Germany and Romania. Trump has previously described the alliance as a "paper tiger" and suggested that U.S. membership is "beyond reconsideration."

White House Assistant Press Secretary Olivia Wales defended the president, asserting he has done more for NATO than anyone else. However, she noted Trump's frustration regarding a lack of ally support during the war with Iran. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova characterized the U.S.-NATO relationship as unhealthy, warning that irresponsible decisions by NATO strategists could lead to a global disaster.
