Kashim Shettima, the Vice President of Nigeria, began a two-week leave on Thursday, August 6, 2026. This marks the first leave of absence for Shettima since he was sworn into office on May 29, 2023.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the leave, which Shettima will use for study, reflection, and intellectual renewal. According to a statement from spokesman Stanley Nkwocha, the period is intended to strengthen the Vice President's capacity for national service. Specifically, Shettima plans to review ongoing administration programs and analyze emerging global and national policy issues to support the implementation of the Federal Government's Renewed Hope Agenda.
Since assuming office, Shettima has chaired the National Economic Council and overseen initiatives regarding food security, economic development, and international economic integration. He is expected to resume his official duties at the end of the two-week period.
