Nate Erskine-Smith Enters Toronto City Council Race for Ward 19

Former federal housing minister Nate Erskine-Smith has filed nomination papers to run for Toronto City Council in the Beaches—East York ward.

Former federal housing minister Nate Erskine-Smith filed nomination papers on August 19, 2026, to run for Toronto City Council in Ward 19 (Beaches—East York). The seat is open because incumbent councillor Brad Bradford is running for mayor. Erskine-Smith, who represented the constituency in the House of Commons from 2015 until his resignation in June, intends to focus his campaign on housing solutions, city services, and the protection of the Toronto waterfront.

This municipal bid follows a series of political setbacks for Erskine-Smith, including his removal from the federal cabinet by Prime Minister Mark Carney after the 2025 election and a failed attempt to secure the Ontario Liberal Party nomination for a Scarborough Southwest byelection. Erskine-Smith defended his transition to local politics, stating that federal politics was no longer sustainable for his family and that provincial renewal efforts had failed.

Erskine-Smith joins a field of 11 candidates, including former CTV News journalist Natalie Johnson. Johnson criticized the candidacy as a "backup plan" following his provincial losses. Mayor Olivia Chow reportedly encouraged Erskine-Smith to run. The move is viewed by some as a strategic effort to leverage name recognition for a potential 2030 mayoral run, similar to Mike Layton's recent entry into the race for Ward 11. Torontonians will vote in the municipal election on October 26.
