Donald Trump Dismisses Safety Warnings for White House Ballroom

President Donald Trump allegedly ignored fire and health safety warnings while overseeing the design of a new White House ballroom. According to internal documents and reports, Trump used a black Sharpie to modify blueprints, expanding the room's footprint while removing service stairs and corridors. James McCrery II, the project's initial architect, warned that these changes created insufficient emergency exit routes, failed to prevent kitchen fires from spreading, and lacked adequate restroom facilities for the room's capacity.

Trump reportedly dismissed these concerns by stating, "I am the code," and asserting that building codes do not apply to White House construction. These disputes led to McCrery's resignation in October 2025. The project is currently managed by the White House Executive Residence rather than the General Services Administration, a move that limits federal oversight. While some reports estimate the cost to taxpayers at $600 million, other accounts claim the project is being funded without taxpayer money.

The White House has denied the claims, calling them "factually false and totally inaccurate." A spokesperson stated that "life safety issues have been addressed and resolved continuously as the design has evolved." The project is now being overseen by the architecture firm Shalom Baranes Associates. Despite public opposition and legal challenges, the Supreme Court of the United States cleared construction to continue in August. Trump has also proposed adding a drone port for unmanned aerial vehicles atop the ballroom, with completion scheduled before his term ends in 2029.
