Pentagon Leaks Reveal Military Dissent Over Iran War

The United States Department of Defense is attempting to contain a leak of the August 14 classified Secretary of Defense Orders Book. The documents reveal that four four-star commanders—the chiefs of Naval Operations, U.S. European Command, U.S. Southern Command, and U.S. Indo-Pacific Command—filed formal non-concurs against plans to maintain over 50,000 U.S. troops in the Middle East through September, with some deployments potentially extending into 2027.

These senior leaders warned Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth that the lack of an end date for the seven-month engagement in Iran is unsustainable and degrades homeland-defense obligations. While the Army and Air Force concurred with the extensions, they also noted significant risks. The conflict has resulted in at least 18 U.S. service member deaths and over 3,500 deaths in Iran, costing $37.5 billion.

Defense Department spokesperson Sean Parnell dismissed the dissent as standard military procedure but characterized the publication of the report as a crime and a betrayal of the force. Army Lieutenant Colonel Adam D’Ortona added that revealing where commanders perceive risk provides adversaries with exploitable information. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump declared the war won and described Iran as a failed nation.
