Oil Prices Spike as Trump Demands Iranian War Reparations

Brent crude oil prices reached $90 per barrel on Tuesday before settling around $87 following a surge in tensions between the United States and Iran. The volatility followed posts by Donald Trump on Truth Social, in which he demanded that Iran pay war reparations and asserted that the United States maintains full control of the Strait of Hormuz.

In response to these demands, Iran announced it would cease all negotiations with the current U.S. administration until the end of the president's mandate in 2029. This breakdown in diplomacy contradicts recent optimism from the Government of Pakistan, whose Defense Minister claimed the two nations were close to an arrangement, and previous statements from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi regarding ongoing engagement.

Market analysts indicate that a peace deal remains distant, leaving global oil prices vulnerable to further spikes. This instability has increased concerns regarding long-term inflation and the possibility of central bank interest rate hikes.
