North and South Korea Conduct Simultaneous Leadership Reshuffles

North and South Korea both conducted significant leadership reshuffles over the weekend of August 29-30, 2026. In Pyongyang, Kim Jong-un guided a meeting of the Workers' Party of Korea Central Military Commission to reorganize defense affairs and tighten military discipline. The reshuffle saw Kim Song-gi, former director of the Korean People's Army General Political Bureau, appointed as the new minister of national defense. He replaces No Kwang-chol, who was dismissed from the ministry and the party's central leadership and demoted to first vice-director of the Munitions Industry Department.

Other North Korean appointments included the return of Pak Jong-chon as vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, as well as the appointments of Yu Kwang-u and Om Ju-ho to leadership roles within the Korean People's Army. During these events, Kim Jong-un awarded state commendations to defense researchers for developing new combat weapon systems, calling the achievements a "great revolution" for the modernity of the army.

Simultaneously, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung initiated a Cabinet reshuffle to stabilize public livelihood and revive economic growth amid a record-low approval rating of 42%. The changes included appointing Lee Hyoung-il as deputy prime minister and minister of finance and economy, and Kang Shin-chul as defense minister. Additional appointments were made across the ministries of Justice, Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and AI-related posts within the presidential office.
