U.S. Sanctions Iran and Chinese Entities to Increase Isolation

The United States government imposed economic sanctions on nearly 60 Iranian and Chinese targets, prompting China and Iran to defend their strategic partnership.

The United States government implemented a new round of economic sanctions against Iran on Monday, targeting nearly 60 individuals, entities, and vessels. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that foreign countries and companies maintaining financial ties with Tehran could face secondary penalties. While the measures targeted companies in mainland China and Hong Kong, they excluded major Chinese financial institutions.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China rejected the threats, stating that sanctions lacking UN Security Council authorization or a basis in international law are opposed. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf praised the Chinese response and asserted that the strategic partnership between Tehran and Beijing "needs no one's permission."

This escalation follows a broader conflict involving the U.S. and Israel that began in February. Washington has increased economic pressure as efforts toward a lasting settlement have stalled.
