Michigan Charges Six Individuals for Illegal 2024 Election Voting

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced criminal charges against six individuals for election-related crimes during the 2024 general election. The defendants include five non-citizens accused of voting despite being ineligible and one U.S. citizen, Kimberley DiDonato, who is charged with election forgery for registering her non-citizen spouse to vote. The charges range from misdemeanors for false statements to felonies for election perjury and forgery.

The prosecutions follow a state review of 38 suspected cases of non-citizen voting occurring between 2009 and 2025. Of those referrals, six resulted in charges, 10 were closed, and 22 remain under review. Among the defendants, Basanth Sadasivian allegedly used the Federal Post Card Application system to vote from the United Kingdom. Two defendants, DiDonato and Robert Piva, claimed their actions were intended to test the registration system or experiment with voter fraud.

House Speaker Mike Johnson responded to the announcement by claiming non-citizen voting is a clear and present danger to American elections and criticized Democrats for opposing voter ID. Conversely, Nessel emphasized that such crimes are rare and that the prosecutions are intended to hold bad actors accountable. The legal actions occur alongside executive orders signed by President Donald Trump in 2025 and 2026 to strengthen citizenship verification for federal elections.
