Trump Administration Imposes Tariffs on Foreign-Made Drones

The Donald Trump administration imposed tariffs of up to 100 percent on foreign-made drones on Thursday. The measures aim to reduce reliance on China and promote domestic manufacturing following a United States Department of Commerce investigation that identified foreign drone reliance as a national security threat.

A 100 percent tariff applies to drones weighing over 55 pounds or those utilizing thermal imaging, while smaller drones face a 25 percent levy. The administration provided lower rates for allies, taxing drones from the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan at 15 percent, and British drones at 10 percent.

Simultaneously, the Federal Communications Commission proposed reclassifying drones with aerosol spraying and thermal imaging as military grade. Critics argue this reclassification would create a retroactive ban on technology currently used by thousands of public safety officials and American businesses. Opponents of the broader policy characterize the tariffs and regulations as protectionism driven by lobbying from U.S. manufacturers.
