OpenAI and Anthropic Hire Former Trump Officials for Washington Ties

OpenAI and Anthropic are recruiting former Trump administration officials to manage regulatory relations and national security priorities as AI becomes a strategic government concern.

AI developers OpenAI and Anthropic are hiring former officials from the administration of President Donald Trump to strengthen their relationships with Washington. The recruitment drive comes as frontier technology is increasingly treated as a national security priority and calls for stricter AI regulation grow.

Anthropic appointed former deputy White House chief of staff Chris Liddell to its board and hired Sihao Huang, a former advisor to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, to lead its frontier compute strategy. These appointments follow a period of friction between the company and the White House, including a Pentagon designation of Anthropic as a supply chain risk.

OpenAI recruited three former officials to lead strategic initiatives. Thomas Lind, previously with the Office of the National Cyber Director, will lead cyber and strategic risk, while Dean Ball from the Office of Science and Technology Policy will serve as head of strategic futures. The company also hired Peter Bowman-Davis, the former Chief AI officer for the Department of Health and Human Services.
