Assam Launches Bamboo Bicycle to Drive Green Industry

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma promoted the economic potential of bamboo as green gold during World Bamboo Day on September 18. He stated that the plant is driving entrepreneurship and sustainable development in Assam by integrating into everyday consumer products and emerging industries.

As part of this initiative, Sarma announced the launch of the Assam Bamboo Cycle, a bicycle crafted from bamboo to promote sustainable mobility. Developed through a collaboration between the Government of Assam and Bamboo India, the project aims to demonstrate the versatility of bamboo beyond traditional applications.

Sarma credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for policy reforms that recognized bamboo as grass, which he said opened new avenues for livelihoods and green industry. The government has scheduled test rides and a public showcase of the bicycle to begin October 2 at the Brahmaputra Riverfront in Guwahati.
