India Celebrates 80th Independence Day with Vande Mataram Tribute

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the celebrations for India's 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, at the Red Fort in Delhi. The ceremony featured the first-ever performance of the national song 'Vande Mataram' by an Army band to commemorate the 150th anniversary of its composition. The event included the hoisting of the national flag, a Rashtriya Salute, and an aerial flower petal shower delivered by Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopters. The Government of India has launched a year-long celebration to honor the legacy of the song.

Across the country, other leaders held commemorative events. He noted that the government aims to be visible in the lives of citizens rather than existing only in official files.

In Agartala, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha hoisted the national flag and praised the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' initiative for fostering patriotism among the youth. Saha credited the central government's leadership for advancements in infrastructure and national security, specifically citing surgical strikes and 'Operation Sindoor'. He also highlighted Tripura's economic growth, noting the state now ranks second in the Northeastern region for GDP and per capita income.
