Trump Threatens EU Visa-Free Travel Over Border Security Deal
President Donald Trump threatened to scrap visa-free travel for EU citizens unless the European Union agrees to an Enhanced Border Security Partnership by year-end 2026.
The administration of Donald Trump has threatened to terminate visa-free travel for European Union citizens unless the EU establishes an Enhanced Border Security Partnership (EBSP) by December 31, 2026. The proposed agreement would grant the United States access to sensitive EU police databases, including biometric data and criminal histories.
The European Commission is currently negotiating a framework agreement that would encompass most EU member states, with the exception of Denmark and Ireland. Simultaneously, U.S. border authorities are seeking to expand requirements for ESTA applicants, demanding five years of social media activity and detailed family information.
EU lawmakers and the watchdog group Statewatch have criticized the proposal, arguing that such a data exchange could violate EU law. Statewatch specifically warned that the shared information could be used to target individuals who oppose U.S. policies. If the two parties fail to reach an agreement by the deadline, EU nationals would be required to undergo the full visa application process for all travel to the United States.
