Trump Weighs Military Action as Iran Blocks Hormuz Strait

President Donald Trump is considering major military strikes or a diplomatic deal as Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping.

President Donald Trump is weighing three strategic options—resuming major military strikes, maintaining a naval blockade and sanctions, or reaching a diplomatic agreement—as a standoff with Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping. The U.S. military has already conducted limited strikes against Iranian air-defense systems on Qeshm Island and disabled a blockade runner.

Iran has effectively shut down the strategic waterway, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps reporting that multiple tankers have hit mines and caught fire. In response, the United States Central Command has expanded its blockade to include Iranian ground transport through a new task force called Iron Gate, designed to disrupt weapons supply networks.

Tehran has conditioned the reopening of the strait and any further negotiations on seven demands, including the end of the U.S. naval blockade, sanctions relief, and the release of frozen assets. The Government of Qatar is currently mediating a proposal that would sequence the lifting of the blockade and the reopening of the strait in exchange for the return of international nuclear inspectors to Iranian facilities.
