Basel Action Network Warns AI Buildout Will Spike E-Waste

Basel Action Network released a report warning that the global rush to construct AI datacenters will create a tsunami of discarded electronics. The non-profit projects that AI-driven equipment retirement could generate up to 13 million metric tonnes of e-waste annually by 2030, potentially tripling the world's annual generation of toxic electronic waste over the next 25 years.

This surge is driven by a rapid replacement cycle where servers and consumer hardware are discarded every two to five years, releasing toxins such as lead, mercury, and cadmium. The report notes a critical lack of management plans for these materials, stating that only one-fifth of current e-waste is properly managed.

Environmental and health experts have urged the federal government of the United States to protect citizens from air pollution linked to the electricity generation required for these facilities. These calls come as the administration of Donald Trump has moved to weaken environmental safeguards governing technological buildouts. McKinsey & Company estimates that the global AI datacenter rollout will require nearly $7 trillion in capital outlays over five years.
