AI Disruption Triggers $160 Billion Slump in Software Stocks
Investors are selling off traditional software stocks as agentic AI threatens the subscription-based SaaS model, causing massive losses for firms like Salesforce and Adobe.
Shares of major software companies have plummeted in 2025 as investors fear artificial intelligence is dismantling the traditional Software as a Service (SaaS) business model. Salesforce, Inc., Adobe Inc., and ServiceNow Inc. have seen combined market value losses of approximately $160 billion this year, with Salesforce shares falling 26% and Atlassian declining 30%. This volatility is driven by the rise of agentic AI and vibe coding, which allow companies to develop custom software and reduce their reliance on expensive paid subscriptions.
Industry leaders describe a fundamental shift in the market. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang suggested that AI is consuming the software industry, while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman characterized the current state of SaaS as entering a fast fashion era. In response to these pressures, Salesforce introduced its Agentforce AI tool to maintain relevance.
Market performance has split between companies perceived as defensive and those playing offense. While traditional firms struggle, Microsoft Corp., Oracle Corp., and Palantir Technologies Inc. continue to perform well. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella noted that customers are shifting from legacy systems toward agentic business applications. Financial analysts warn that companies wedded to old technology will suffer unless they pivot, though some note that rising AI adoption trends remain encouraging despite the aggressive spending required to compete.
