Oil Prices Rise as Trump Rejects Iran Ceasefire Deal

President Donald Trump rejected a June ceasefire deal with Iran, sparking oil price hikes and threats of retaliation amid a six-month conflict.

Global oil prices rose on August 27, 2026, after Donald Trump informed mediators he has no interest in returning to the terms of a June memorandum of understanding with Iran. Brent crude rose more than $2 a barrel to approximately $90, while West Texas Intermediate settled near $84. The diplomatic stalemate follows the U.S. announcement of the toughest sanctions in history against Iran, including Operation Economic Outcast, a Treasury Department campaign designed to sever all economic lifelines to the Iranian regime.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the U.S. is not negotiating with Iran and will maintain its naval blockade of Iranian ports. In response, Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaei warned that Tehran would strike U.S. military and economic interests. Iran further declared it would block U.S., French, and UK vessels from entering the Hormuz region and threatened retaliation against U.S.-linked shipping and financial interests.

The conflict, now in its sixth month, has seen the U.S. conduct strikes against Iran's nuclear program and clear mines from the Strait of Hormuz. Tensions escalated further when Iranian state TV allegedly placed a $10 million bounty on Barron Trump, the president's son, prompting an investigation by the U.S. Secret Service. Despite the geopolitical friction, U.S. equity markets closed higher, driven by strong earnings from Nvidia.

Efforts to mediate continue, with the Prime Minister of Qatar visiting Tehran to attempt to relaunch talks to end the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran. However, the U.S. maintains that all options remain on the table.
