Kentucky 6th District House Race Becomes Toss-Up

Republican Ralph Alvarado and Democrat Zach Dembo are locked in a competitive race for Kentucky's 6th Congressional District amid shifting voter sentiment.

The race for Kentucky's 6th Congressional District has shifted to a toss-up as midterm elections approach. Republican candidate Ralph Alvarado, a state senator and former Tennessee health commissioner, initially campaigned with an endorsement from Donald Trump but has since distanced himself from the president's support and specific tariff policies.

Democratic candidate Zach Dembo, a Navy veteran and former federal prosecutor, is centering his campaign on opposition to Trump's policies regarding tariffs, Medicaid cuts, and the politicization of the Department of Justice. The district, which includes the city of Lexington, shows a divided political identity, having voted for Trump by 15 points in 2024 while supporting Democratic Governor Andy Beshear by 20 points the previous year.

This contest is part of a wider Democratic strategy to target traditionally red districts. The shift in momentum follows a significant decline in Trump's approval ratings in Kentucky, which Civiqs polling indicates have fallen 34 points since January of last year.
