Meta Releases Open-Source Muse Glimmer AI Model

Meta Platforms Inc. released Muse Glimmer, a distilled AI model with 30 billion parameters designed to run on a single computer with one graphics card. The model focuses on efficiency and agent-like tasks such as schedule management and file organization. Meta is providing the weights for Muse Glimmer and a version of the more powerful Muse Spark model under a permissive license via Hugging Face, a strategy that mirrors trends among Chinese AI firms to attract users.

Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg accompanied the release with an essay titled "The Future is for Everyone," arguing that distributing superintelligence is safer than centralizing it within a few companies. Zuckerberg emphasized that the United States must maintain primacy over China in the AI race, citing China's advantages in rapid infrastructure development. While Meta continues to offer the original Muse Spark as a paid, closed model, the company plans to release a more powerful model, internally named Watermelon, in the coming months.

The release intensifies a divide in Silicon Valley. Meta, Nvidia, Microsoft, and Google support open-source availability to foster innovation, while rivals OpenAI and Anthropic advocate for tight restrictions to ensure safety. Separately, Meta announced a $1 billion fund to invest in U.S. communities where it operates data centers to address local resistance to the resource-intensive nature of hyperscale computing.
