Governor Andy Beshear Demands Health Updates From Senator Mitch McConnell
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear is urging Senator Mitch McConnell to verbally prove his capacity to serve following a June fall and prolonged absence from public view.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has demanded that Senator Mitch McConnell provide a direct verbal update to the public to prove his capacity to serve in the U.S. Senate or resign. Speaking on CBS News' 'Face the Nation' on August 16, Beshear stated he has heard absolutely nothing back from McConnell despite sending formal letters in July requesting transparency. Beshear argued that written statements are insufficient and criticized Senate Majority Leader John Thune for failing to ensure that all senators are capable of fulfilling their duties.
Senator McConnell, 84, was hospitalized on June 14 after a fall at his Washington, D.C., home, which resulted in a brief period of unconsciousness and a mild case of pneumonia. After spending nearly two months in a rehabilitation center for physical therapy—a process complicated by childhood polio—McConnell was discharged to recover at home on August 6. While his office has released written statements and some Republican colleagues claim to have had substantive conversations with him, he has not made a public appearance.
Reactions to the absence have been divided. Senator Tommy Tuberville called for more information, while Senator Rand Paul defended McConnell, arguing against the requirement for elderly senators to prove they are alive. Associates expect McConnell, who announced his retirement in February 2025, to return to the Senate on September 14.
